Causes and Treatments:
Most of us think of just teenagers having to deal with unsightly acne, but in truth, it can affect all of us at any time in our lives. Teenagers typically expereince acne due to the hormal changes happening in early adulthood. Specficially in increase androgens such as testosterone. This then leads to an increase of sebum productions, which can start an avalanche of events leading to problem skin.
Environmental factors, such as increase in stress and hormonal changes all add to an increase in oil production in the skin in all ages groups. Adults see these flucuations in hormones around periods, during pregnancy and after discontinuing or starting birth control pills and particularly at the onset of perimenopause- basically any hormal changes can trigger acne outbreak.
Perimenopause is a time during which a woman’s body is transistion into complete loss of fertility or menopause. This typcially begins to happen as early as 40’s, although symptoms might be mild in the beginning. Due to a decline of B-estradiol, a common estrogen and progresterone, a woman’s body can be thrown off balance. Conversely, although woman produce a small amount of male sex hormone, androgens, because of the decline of female sex hormones, the effects become more dominate. This leads to skin becomming excessively oily as wel as dehydrated during different times of the month.
Oily skin there are 3 factors you need to deal with: Sebum, Bacteria and Enclosure. Sebum is an oily substance that lubricates the skin and helps to prevent surface dehydration. If there is an overabundance of sebum productions, it fills the sebaceous duct. This extra sebum serves as nutrients for bacteria, which creates an perfect environment for blackheads (clogged pores). This environment can invite more harmful bacteria that can draw white and red blood cells to the area, causing inflammation and infection. Enclosure occrs when the walls of the sebaceous duct thickens with the formation of keratinaceous. This stops the flow of sebum, creating an enclosed environment where blackheads and whiteheads grow leading to pustules and cysts. You do not want it to get that far..
At-Home Treatments:
Get a good Cleanser! Foremost in the skin care regime is your cleanser. I usually alternate between 2. I recommend Dermaquest Glyco Cleanser or Vitamin C Cleanser, to not just clients suffering from acne but also to any one with mildly oily skin. If you tend to be more oily than dry, be sure to use a cleanser that is “gel” rather than “creamy”. Creamy cleansers work best for dry skin. These cleansers will help eliminate surface bacteria and they work great a resurfacers. For make- up wearers, I suggest a double cleanse method, Oil cleansers work great for breaking down makeup and then follow with a glycol or gel cleanser. Moisturize, even if you are oily.
